Bloomington/Normal Bass Club!
The BNBC 1st annual Joan Martoglio Memorial tournament was held on Lake Bloomington on 6-16-19. The teams of fisherman found the bass in a very cooperative mood on Sunday at Lake Bloomington. Teams reported great catch rates, but small sizes predominated the catches, but fun was had by all! This tournament to honor the passing of the wife of local long time BNBC member and fisherman Jerry Martoglio was very entertaining and a great way to show support for Jerry and his families loss, and to benefit a great charity. At the conclusion of the tournament a check for $2500 was given to the St. Jude’s Affiliate Clinics that supports getting children to and from St. Jude hospitals locally. The team winning the tournament showed tremendous character and support for this charity by returning the 1st place monies as a donation! The 2nd place team also returned 1/2 of their winnings to the charity as well, how awesome is that? Spectators at the weigh in also contributed monies for St. Judes, insuring going forward to the next charity tournament on 7-6-19 that they will receive another nice donation, so make plans to attend and support this local worthwhile charity!

I know that she is very pleased with this celebration of life and a display of loving memory to her from her friends and family.
The BNBC Tuesday Night tournament schedule took anglers to Dawson Lake on 6-11-19. The teams found plenty of vegetation in the lake as the vegetation has spread greatly so far this year. This thick vegetation helped to make the fishery smaller and also more difficult to zone in on the fish as well. However; as we all know some team is going to figure them out and get it done and last night was no exception!
1st Place Team-Merritt/Walker-5 fish #7.45
2nd Place Team-Johnson/Morrison-5 fish #7.39

Hope to see you there!
The BNBC Saturday tournament schedule took us to beautiful Lake Sangcris on Saturday 6-8-19. Weather was nice and the lake provided outstanding fishing for most participants. Fish were caught on several types of baits and patterns. One team set the bar high for big sack of the year however!

Fishing, hot dogs, chips, cookies, watermelon, prizes, how can you beat that for a great day at Miller Park? All of those things were in the mix last evening as the Bloomington-Normal Bass Club held it’s annual youth fishing event at Miller Park. It is the 38th year that the club has supported this initiative in an effort to open the interest of young people to the joy of fishing, and the appreciation of our natural resources. We had 31 young fisher people attend and get involved in our little “tournament” and introduction to the sport. At the conclusion of the fishing portion the club fed fisher people and their parents and or adult that accompanied them to the event. Judging from the reactions and results I think we were successful in getting a few interested in the great sport of fishing! At the conclusion of the picnicking, we gave out prizes to all of the participants and congratulated them on their efforts and results.
Well all I can say is wait until next year!
A big thank you goes out to all of the club volunteers, past and present, that attended and aided in education and catching of the fish going forward. Several volunteers provided equipment for the attendees that didn’t have rods and reels to participate in the event.

On 5-26-19 the BNBC St. Jude Charity tournament on Lake Evergreen was held under threatening skies and very windy conditions. 8 teams braved the blustery conditions in an effort to aid St. Jude’s Children’s hospital, and to catch some bass. Water color and temperatures were favorable, and the rain in the forecast also held off, however; this spring’s constant companion for fishing, the wind continued to blow. Teams found fishing very poor and catches were hard to come by, 1 team brought 1 legal sized fish to the scales and claimed all the prizes! This team also shared some of their purse back to the charity.
Sam Lemans helped to sponsor this event as well, and weigh in was done at the Sam Lemans pavilion.

The BNBC Saturday Tournament schedule traveled to Sangcris Lake on 4-2-19. Teams found the conditions windy and cool for the start of the tournament with blue bird skies as well. Teams reported fishing to be a little slow, and keepers very scarce in water temperatures form the mid 50′s to the low 60′s. Teams reported catching good numbers of smaller bass during the tournament. However’; as usual someone finds the right formula to catch the bass and this tournament was no exception.

Well the BNBC Tuesday Night Tourney series is on a roll! 2nd Tourney of the year and weather was delightful and many teams appeared interested in getting their season off to a good start. 17 teams signed up to fish at Dawson Lake on 4-16-19 on a very pleasant evening. Unfortunately however 1 team experienced the dreaded issue with their boat not wanting to perform and so we had only 16 teams tackle the lake. Teams found the fishing much slower than had been experienced the previous week, maybe they were still getting over the recent snow storm? Regardless as is always the case some team is going to excel, and last night was no exception. The team of Gregory and Gregory showed everyone how to do it with a nice limit of #7.36 edging out the weeks previous winner who had #7.10.

The 2019 Tuesday Night Tournament series kicked off on Dawson Lake on 4-8-19 on a beautiful evening with mild temperatures and gentle breezes. Many teams must have been champing at the bit to begin the season as we had a very good turn out of 14 teams! Teams found the water temps in the high 50′s and lower 60′s, with clarity very good and conducive to the visibility of their presentations. Fish was fair and there were a good number of teams weighing in bags of fish, larger fish were rare however, but good fish were weighed in, and I believe everyone enjoyed the event as it was a departure from the desire to actually get out and go fishing.

See you at Spring Lake!
Speaker from Interstate Batteries Matt Sutter spoke to the club about their sponsorship of the bass club by giving 10% discount to members buying products at their store. He also spoke about the use of the batteries that we commonly use in our bass boats.
AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) batteries are a bit better than the less expensive and more commonly used flooded acid batteries that most of us use. He indicated that in his estimation, depending on the way you use your deep cycle batteries that most of us would not get “bang for the buck” for the more expensive AGM batteries, however; if you have concerns and want more information on the subject just stop by and talk to them they will be glad to advise you.
Batteries are better served with the use of the new automatic chargers that sense battery conditions and adjust charge rate to maintain them, whereas the manual chargers should be disconnected when charge is complete to reduce chance of damage to your batteries.
I encourage members to stop by and see the guys at Interstate Batteries and talk to them about your needs and even issues with your batteries, they will be glad to help. The also carry batteries for more than just autos and boats, so check them out! We really appreciated Matt taking time to come by and see us to aid in our understanding and use of our batteries!
Don’t forget to pencil in the Spring Lake tourney on 3-30-19, you can sign up and join at the ramp, so hope to see you there!
The BNBC March 6th meeting will have Matt, from Interstate Batteries speak to the club about battery use and maintenance. March 6th meeting will also kick off the tournament season as we will be signing up to the March 30th tournament on Spring Lake! March 6th meeting will also have a special raffle to kick off the new tournament season!
Make a note to attend the meeting on March 6th at Lemans Toyota!

The BNBC Saturday Classic tournament was held on New Lake Gillespie on 10-13-18, 10-14-18, 6 teams that had qualified participated in the tournament. Leaving from various central Illinois locations teams were surprised, I think, to have it start snowing on Friday as they left for Litchfield! Colder temperatures and rain were the weather as they arrived in Litchfield prior to day 1. Saturday presented a starting temperature of 38 degrees with a brisk wind as they launched for the tourney. New Lake Gillespie has a slot of no fish between 12″ and 15″ are to be kept. Water temps were in the mid to upper 60′s at take off. Fishermen reported mixed success with the fishing but as always someone figures it out, and this day was no exception. The team of Johnson/Somodi brought in 5 fish limit of 11.86 to take over the lead in the tournament. They were followed with 2nd Place team of Martoglio/Russell-#6.04, and 3rd Place team of Merritt/Walker-#4.68.
Day 2 was somewhat warmer but had a threat of rain, teams found fishing a bit slower for the day, but again someone always seems to figure it out, and this was the case here as well. The team of Martoglio/Russell brought in the only 5 fish limit of #12.21, bringing their total for the tournament to #18.25. The day 1 leaders Johnson/Somodi stumbled with no fish, but held on to 2nd place with #11.86. The 3rd place team of Merritt/Walker finished with #9.10.
Day 1 Big Bass Maisenbacher/Bree-#2.96

Hope to see all there!
The BNBC Tuesday Night Classic tournament was held on Lake Stephen Forbes on 9-29-18, 9-30-18, 11 teams participated. This lake hasn’t been visited by the BNBC for a few years due to the implementation of a slot limit of must release fish from 14″ ~ 18″. The thought process was that this regulation had been in place for 4 years and larger fish would be more accessible and likely due to the allowance to grow without harvesting. The results of the BNBC tourney didn’t support that assumption, as teams found catching a fish over the 18″ slot to be somewhat difficult! Teams also found catching fish in the 12″ ~14″ range to be somewhat difficult as well. This may have been a result of the impact of the pretty severe cold front that occurred on Friday, as well as DNR shocking on Thursday prior to the tourney. Regardless fishing was spotty for the teams, however; someone always figures it out and this tourney was no exception. The team of Overocker/Vickers again showed their prowess on the lake, as they had won the last classic held here, with a bag of #14.43 on the opening day. This limit put them in a commanding position, as the next closest team weighed in #7.89. Day 2 was a beautiful day with warmer temps and reduced winds, but the fish didn’t seem to cooperate on this day as well. The 1st place team weighed 1 fish #1.25 and the 2nd place team also weighed in 1 fish #1.36, which changed the leader board a bit.
1st Place Team-Overocker/Vickers-6 fish – #15.68
2nd Place Team-Morrison/Johnson-5 fish – #14.51
3rd Place Team-Martoglio/Russell-10 fish – #1131
4th Place Team-Bree/Maisenbacher-6 fish – #11.02

Big Critter Day 1-Morrison Johnson – #6.39
Big Bass Day 2-Gregory/Gregory – #5.75

Classic berths need to be filled in and time is running out, so come join in for the last few tournaments of the year!
The BNBC weekend tournament series continued on Dawson Lake replacing the Havana event on the schedule. Again this year water levels created an unacceptable condition for the bass club to hold an event there this year.
Saturday 8-18-18 the conditions were cool and foggy for the contestants on Dawson Lake. Fishing was spotty and limits were not plentiful, but good fish were caught.
1st Place Team-Martoglio/Russell-5 fish #7.61

The BNBC meeting on 4-4-18 at Sam Lemans was very moving for the membership as our speaker came to address the club related to the St. Jude Children’s Hospital. Jamey Apps, and her son Oliver aged 8 years, came and spoke to the club expressing the great work that the hospital does. Her son, Oliver, was diagnosed with Leukemia in 2016 and was admitted to the St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Memphis right away and began treatment. All this was done without cost to her and her family to treat the illness and make Oliver better. Oliver spoke to the members and told of how that had begun and how it was being done, all very moving to the group for such a young person. Upon the completion of their presentation the BNBC awarded Oliver a rod and reel combo, a tackle box, and some tackle and a fishing hat signed by Denny Brauer to him, he was very happy to get these things.
Jamey Apps is going to be present at the BNBC charity tournament on Lake Bloomington on 5-26-18 to present prizes to the winning teams and to receive the check from the clubs charity tournament collection. A flier for sign up at this tournament was presented to the members present for review and was accepted as drafted and will be printed and made available soon upon confirmation of allowing unlimited horsepower boats to participate. An exemption is being sought from the city management to allow motors over 40hp to idol only during this event. The event will be a team tournament as well.
The BNBC 2018 tourney opener was held on Spring Lake on 3-31-18, to kick off the 2018 schedule. This year tourneys are being scheduled on Saturdays to aid in tournament approvals with the targeted lakes, and to reduce conflicts with Sunday cluttered tournament schedules.
Seven hardy and optimistic teams showed up for the 1st tournament of the year on a windy, chilly, and threat of rain day. Take off was dry and wind wasn’t too heavy for start of the tournament, temps in the upper 30′s. Water temps at take off ranged around the low 40′s to the mid 40s, and was basically pretty clear. Fishing was slow for all the teams, but as is usually the case someone always figures it out, and this tournament was no exception. The team of Martoglio and Russell brought in a nice bag of 4 fish to win the event, and the team of the Umland brothers was 2nd.
1st Place-Martoglio/Russell-4 fish, #14.94 and BB of #4.87

This puts the team of Martoglio/Russell in 1s place for team of the year with the next tournament on Sangcris on 4-21-18 sign up at the meeting on 4-4-18 at Sam Lemans upstairs in the training room. Speaker at the meeting is from St. Jude’s Children’s hospital, so come out and sign up and get some great information on this wonderful charity. It is also a great time to get the 2018 membership taken care of prior to the tourney on 4-21-18.
Happy Easter to everyone and hope to see you at next meeting or next tournament, hope you’re catching them!
